Who is Health Communications?

We’re “those guys in Florida” who first got the attention of the publishing industry with Adult Children of Alcoholics (Janet G. Woititz, Ed.D., 1983), our first New York Times bestseller on the “Advice How-To” list, which remained there for over 40 weeks. Publishers Weekly anointed us the #1 self-help publisher, and our string of other New York Times and national bestsellers, including Healing the Shame that Binds You (John Bradshaw, 1988), cemented our reputation as a pioneer in the recovery and self-help genres.

In 1993, HCI Books added Inspiration to the portfolio when we became the original publisher of the phenomenal Chicken Soup for the Soul series. This culminated in over 100 titles in the series, foreign editions in almost every language on earth, a Guinness World Record for having the most titles on the New York Times bestseller list at the same time, and tens of millions of heartstrings tugged.

A Child Called It (Dave Pelzer, 1995) and his follow-up, The Lost Boy (1997) are two of the most poignant and unforgettable memoirs ever published. We are honored that Dave continued to entrust HCI Books with his life story in The Return to the River (2023).

Our evolution as a publisher and our contribution to the industry continued with bestsellers in parenting such as The Sleepeasy Solution (Jennifer Waldburger and Jill Spivack, 2007), in personal growth with Evolve Your Brain (Joe Dispenza, D.C., 2008), and in lifestyle with Hypnobirthing; The Mongan Method, 3rd and 4th Editions (Marie F. Mongan, M.Ed., 2005, 2015).

Pets are a big part of our lives, and one of our perennial bestselling Chicken Soup authors brought us From Fearful to Fear Free™ (Marty Becker, D.V.M., et al., 2018) which is a must-read for any pet lover whose dog suffers from fear, anxiety, and stress.

Our roots in self-help and recovery remain the backbone of our publishing program with bestsellers such as The Betrayal Bond (Patrick Carnes, Ph.D., 2019), a revised edition of Dr. Carnes’ original work we published in 1997. Dr. Ken Adams has a new book, A Light in the Dark (Kenneth Adams, Mary Meyer, Culle Vande Garde, 2023), which is as groundbreaking as his first work, the seminal book Silently Seduced (2011).

But like a healthy tree sustained by strong roots, we also enjoy branching out and offering readers variety like the perennial bestseller, The Schwarzbein Principle Cookbook (Diana Schwarzbein, MD, Nancy Deville and Evelyn Jacob Jaffe, 1999 ), or one of our newer releases, Whole Mama Yoga (Alesandra DeSiato and Lauren Sacks, 2023).

As you can see, we’ve never rested on our laurels. We are still hard at work doing what we’re passionate about: publishing great authors and changing lives—one book at a time.
